Lianxianglou, a Time-Honoured Chinese Establishment

Lianxianglou, founded in 1889, is a renowned time-honoured Chinese brand widely known as the “Home of Lotus Seed Paste” and an iconic symbol of Cantonese culinary culture. This lighting design project aims to preserve the brand’s century-old heritage while infusing modern aesthetics and international vision, revitalising the historic brand and delivering a culturally rich, visually refined spatial experience for guests worldwide.

I. Design Concept

• Cultural Heritage & Innovative Symbiosis

Centered on the symbolic lotus as the core spatial language, we draw on traditional elements including Lingnan lattice windows and ink-wash lotus motifs. Transformed through light and shadow, the century-old legacy blends naturally with contemporary spatial aesthetics.

 Balanced Atmosphere & Functionality

Moving beyond the flat, full lighting of traditional tea houses, we adopt a strategy of accent lighting + detail lighting. This satisfies functional dining requirements while creating an elegant, refined, and ritualistic dining ambience.

• Light Narrative & Emotional Resonance

Using mirrored ceilings, water-pattern light effects, and an elegant contrast of red and green tones, we build multi-layered spatial storytelling. Diners experience the elegant charm and lively spirit of Cantonese culture through shifting light and shadow.

II. Lighting Design Highlights

Entrance & Facade: Warm wall-washer lights highlight the gilded “Lianxianglou” sign. Warm glow from floor-to-ceiling windows creates strong visual guidance, conveying the heritage brand’s approach ability and premium quality.

Atrium & Circulation: Taking advantage of the high-ceiling volume, high-CRI spotlights accent the signature staircase and mirror installations. The vertical composition creates a theatrical, maze-like effect, guiding guests between tradition and modernity.

Dining Areas: 2700K warm light combines indirect illumination with precise down lights to ensure adequate table surface brightness. Soft light enhances the relaxed mood of Cantonese yum-cha while bringing out the true colour and texture of food.

Details & Materials: For carved wood, ceramic vessels, and other traditional finishes, Ra97 high-CRI light sources are used to restore authentic colours, ensuring every detail is refined and authentic.

III. Project Value

Brand Revitalisation: Modern lighting language reinterprets the heritage brand, positioning Lianxianglou as both traditional and pioneering on the international stage.

Experience Upgrade: Immersive light-and-shadow dining allows global guests to enjoy authentic Cantonese cuisine while deeply experiencing Lingnan culture.

• Industry Benchmark: Provides a replicable model for lighting design in heritage commercial spaces, proving that traditional culture and modern design can thrive together.
